Summertime is my favorite time to catch up with the latest blockbusters, especially when those movies are based on books. Here are five must-watch book-to-movie adaptations to help you find the perfect summer movie to add to your watch list!
The Princess Bride
One of my favorite movies of all time, and no I have not yet read the book. Yes, I know. I’m sorry about that too. I promise it is on my short list. Are you a fan of the movie? Let me know.
Howl’s Moving Castle
Another dear favorite movie of mine that I have not yet read the book for *ducks*. I was introduced to the world of Miyazaki and his films by this movie. If you haven’t yet given it a go, this is a movie you must add to your watch list.
The DUFF
Now this is a movie based on a book I have read! The DUFF movie is vastly different from the book, but that is one of the reasons I love it so. Instead of a retelling of the same story we get two amazing stories in their own right.
The Divergent Series (Divergent & Insurgent out now)
Alright, I’m probably going to get stoned for this but no, I haven’t read the books yet. But I am loving the movie series so far and I can’t wait to see the final installment!
The Hunger Games Series (The Hunger Games, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 out now)
I loved the books (yes, even Mockingjay) and have been blown away with the adaptations. The movie ending of Catching Fire has been stuck in my brain ever since I saw it in theaters. If you haven’t yet dived into this movie series, now is the perfect time. The final movie comes out later this year!
The Giver
My mother and I saw The Giver soon after watching the first movie in the Divergent series. She found them both to be similar, and they are as both deal with dystopian futures. But where Divergent has action, The Giver has memories and emotion. This is a movie that brought me to tears, so prepare yourself!

Loved the Hunger Games books. I read the 2nd during the rainy Bali afternoons last summer. I’ve recently read Gone Girl and Wild after seeing their films. Both films do an excellent job or recreating very strong narratives. Keep up the good work!! X

I loved the Hunger Games too!
I saw the Gone Girl movie (whoa!) but haven’t heard of Wild, I’ll have to check that one out.
I love when movies bring something new to a story. For me as long as the heart of the story is there it is okay if there are changes, but I know many readers who can’t stand it. To each his own, right? 🙂
Thank you!

No Jurassic Park!? No Maze Runner!? I has the sads now ;(

Those are ALSO excellent movies everyone should watch now ;). Maybe you need to create a continuation of this post? I think that’d be fun!

So many great books. I read The Hunger games in about a week. The divergent series is worth reading and it’s a little different from the movie. I recommend reading four which tells part of the first book from his perspective.
Kate Tilton says
Agreed, Crystal! I enjoyed The Hunger Games books and movies greatly. I’m excited to see the rest of the Divergent movies and to finally read the books (including Four) ;). Do you have any favorite book-based movies?
Chris Mentzer says
Big fan of The Princess Bride and I have read the book, at least, the shortened version. Love the Hunger Games trilogy books but not as big a fan of the films. I felt they could have done things a little differently though the movies are pretty cool.

I have yet to read the book The Princess Bride, but it is one of my all time favorite movies! Personally, I really loved the Hunger Games as movies, I found especially Catching Fire gripped my attention and had me dying to see the next one. But we do all have our own tastes. 🙂
