Rouge (Cheveux Roux #1) by Leigh Talbert Moore

I listened to the Rouge audiobook and what a great story! I actually had no idea what the story was about when I first selected it on my iPod, but I was certainly pleased with my pick! Rouge tells the story of Hale Ferrer, the rising star of the hottest cabaret in New Orleans. Hale has many struggles and most are caused by her choice to take in the young orphan Teeny. Usually when characters are the cause of their own problems I get frustrated, but I found Hale’s commitment to taking care of Teeny to be very honorable. I admired her willingness to do what was necessary for the good of others. The setting of Rouge was another thing that caught my fancy. I can’t recall ever having read a book set in New Orleans. This is really where the narrator shined, she had the perfect accent to show the Southern setting without it being over the top. Now add in some charming gentlemen (Beau, Freddie, and Roland) to the mix and you’ve got a book for me! I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book in the series.
Far Outside the Ordinary by Prissy Elrod

Wow. So memoirs have never been my preferred reading. I generally like fiction because I find often in fiction I can experience things that I will never be able to in my life (like aliens, fairies, and everything that goes bump in the night). Far Outside the Ordinary is certainly something I hope to never experience in my own life. Prissy survived incredible amounts of pain and loss. Loss I can’t even begin to fathom. Still, Prissy also found incredible love and happiness in her life. Far Outside the Ordinary is well written, powerful, and a book I recommend read.
Shushy-baa-baa by Ian Lauchlan

The artwork in this picture book is beautiful! I have a big soft spot for picture books because I know how much love and effort goes into each illustration. The colors, softness, and uniqueness of each face drew me to this book. The story itself was also rather good. My one complaint about the story is that the ending seemed a bit incomplete, but others might not feel this way. I am certainly interested in checking out other books by this illustrator. If you have young children or are an art freak like myself Shushy-baa-baa would make an excellent edition to your collection.
Giveaway!
I have Rouge on audio as well! I can’t wait to listen!
Oh! That’s so cool Gabrielle! I loved the narrator for ROUGE and the story is great. I hope you love it. 🙂
ROUGE sounds interesting. For another great book with a New Orleans setting, check out OUT OF THE EASY by Ruta Sepetys. Fabulous!
ROUGE was a great read, I’d love to know what you think if you check it out. 🙂 I have heard wonderful things about OUT OF THE EASY. I so need to get it!
I remember reading an excerpt of ROUGE before. I defiantly need to pick up the whole book. Thank you for sharing!
You should check it out Fida! ROUGE was a great read and it’s only 99 cents now! Let me know what you think when you get a chance to read it. 🙂
PS. If you buy the ebook the audiobook price is then reduced. It makes it super affordable to get the audiobook that way.
I enjoyed the review of Shushy Baa-Baa because I have a young granddaughter and this would be perfect to read to her.
Oh I’m so glad to hear that Connie! Shushy-Baa-Baa was a lovely picture book. The artwork is so beautiful. I’m really looking forward to reading more picture books with the same illustrator. 🙂

Thanks Peter, I’ll let Connie know!
I want to read The Young Elites by Marie Lu. I recently read Legend and loved it. I will read the next book in the Legend series but I am excited to read this new series. I loved the author’s way of creating a world and drawing me into it. Your review of the book just reenforced that this story will have the same elements that made me love Legend–the descriptive wording that makes me feel that I am apart of that world.
The Young Elites was a great book! The Legend series is still my favorite of Marie’s work but it is clear Marie has a great knack for writing. Her world building is one of the best parts of the story (after the characters, in my personal opinion). I can’t wait to hear your thoughts Karen!
Thanks so much, Kate! <3
My pleasure Leigh! <3
