Summary (Goodreads):
This is a world divided by blood – red or silver.
The Reds are commoners, ruled by a Silver elite in possession of god-like superpowers. And to Mare Barrow, a seventeen-year-old Red girl from the poverty-stricken Stilts, it seems like nothing will ever change.
That is, until she finds herself working in the Silver Palace. Here, surrounded by the people she hates the most, Mare discovers that, despite her red blood, she possesses a deadly power of her own. One that threatens to destroy the balance of power.
Fearful of Mare’s potential, the Silvers hide her in plain view, declaring her a long-lost Silver princess, now engaged to a Silver prince. Despite knowing that one misstep would mean her death, Mare works silently to help the Red Guard, a militant resistance group, and bring down the Silver regime.
But this is a world of betrayal and lies, and Mare has entered a dangerous dance – Reds against Silvers, prince against prince, and Mare against her own heart…

Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard has received a lot of hype and for good reason. I won’t say it lived up to my expectations because I honestly had no clue what to expect. Despite having lots of friends stating how much they loved it (or disliked it), I never got spoiled (thank goodness!). I basically went in with an open mind, so my personal opinion about Red Queen is it is one freaking amazing read.
This book messed with my heart, my mind and made me feel very foolish in the end. I’m HURT. I’m still reeling from the events that take place in the last quarter of the book and I’m not sure if I’ll make a quick recovery. I TRUSTED though I was warned against that. This book constantly repeats, “Anyone can betray anyone”, and yet I still foolishly trusted and handed out my heart on a silver platter. And it was such a weird thing because I rarely side with the “other” side, but I guess I fell too much into Mare’s character.
Red Queen offers all that I love–princes, powerful abilities, strong characters, a rebellion–it was truly hard not to get hooked. This is a huge book and yet, I was done within a day. I must admit that all the hype and the mention of some lack of romance was what made me put off reading this book, but now I regret waiting so long to open its pages. I won’t say Red Queen is terribly unique, but it sure has put a spin on things. Plus it’s bold and the author took some dangerous decisions with the plot.
I’m suffering from Red Queen hangover at the moment and it frustrates me that there’s still a long way to go until Glass Sword releases. I need it. I need to fix my betrayed heart and feel once again the thrill of this new (to me) fantasy world. I want more action, more romance, more power. I believe the cause and I want to see Mare succeed. To rise, red as the dawn.
