Being a book nerd, bookworm, book dragon, or whatever name you like to use to declare yourself a book lover is one of the greatest joys on Earth. I mean, we get to meet these amazing worlds inside BOOKS. Worlds that we can hold in our hands either in physical or digital format. And it’s amazing to be able to pet them, hug them, and show their pretty covers on our shelves full of books, right?
However, with great joy comes great sorrow, for when something goes wrong or threatens the safety of your beloved books, well… let’s just say that it hurts pretty darn much.
As book lovers, especially book bloggers, we tend to share with the world our love for books quite openly. We give them away, gift books, and yes, sometimes we even lend them to our closest friends.
That’s bookish pain #1 – Lending books
We can’t help it. Out of the goodness of our book loving hearts and our desire to let people know about them, we lend them in hopes that they love it as much as we do. What’s the worst thing that can happen?
Best case scenario? You get it back in a few weeks, tops. In good condition. Maybe just a page dog-eared or the front cover a bit bent on the corner. No biggy. Worst case scenario? You don’t get it back at all OR you get it back after 4+ months in horrible condition. Then your heart dies a bit (or a lot depending on how special the book is). That’s true torture right there, friends.
Bookish Pain #2 – Damaging your own book.
Despite our effort to take care of them, there are times when accidents happen. Say, you were reading the book in bed and you fell asleep on top of it, only to find when you wake up that you either bent some pages or ripped them off. Not to mention all those times you drop them or spill water on them. And sometimes your relatives might mistakenly do the same when visiting & browsing your shelves. 🙁
Bookish Pain #3 – Parting from your books
Then there comes the time when life gets in the way and you somehow find yourself packing your stuff because you’ll either go on vacation or move to a different house in a different city (for work, college, etc.). When it is for vacations, then the bookish pain will be brief and last just a few weeks, tops. But when it is because you are moving away then the bookish pain gets real. Because it’s sometimes impossible to take all your books with you since you have to pack other things besides books to get you settled in your new place. But which ones to take? Which ones to donate? Tough times, and you’ll probably end up trying to ship them all ahead of you and your wallet will suffer for it too.
And that brings me to Bookish Pain #4 – Must get all the books
Buying books is one of the most amazing things you could ever do as a book lover. Their brand new book smell, the new story inside, and the adventure awaiting you. And yet it brings so much pain when you can’t buy them all. New books are being published EVERY DAY and it’s impossible to keep up with all of them. There are just too many. Your pocket knows it AND your mind knows it, yet your heart and soul refuse to accept the knowledge, and so, they suffer.
