Editor’s Note: Shelfie closed in 2017.
Nothing beats a bookshelf stacked full of beautiful books you adore. Too often, though, bookshelves are filled with unread books.
We want to change that with Shelfie. Shelfie is a free app that gets books off the shelves by offering free or deeply discounted ebook editions of those print books.
How does Shelfie work for readers?
Take a shelfie (a photo of your bookshelf) and the app will create a digital catalogue of your book collection. Just think, your entire library catalogued in one place with just a few snaps.
Then, tap over to the ebooks tab to see which of your books are eligible for ebook bundles. Many books are free, so you can claim the ebook edition at no extra cost and have it handy on your ereader or your phone.
Which books are eligible for readers to download?
Shelfie works with over 1,200 publishers including three of the Big Five publishers, HarperCollins, Macmillan, and Hachette. There are about 300,000 titles eligible for bundling in the app. Typically, the Shelfie catalogue will cover 25% of your library, but if you like sci-fi, fantasy, Christian, or technical books, you’re in luck. The Shelfie catalogue is particularly strong in these genres.
Authors, get readers talking about your book
When readers get ebooks through Shelfie, they are not limited to reading in the app. They can read the ebooks on any device. It’s their book to keep.
Research by Codex showed that 19% of book discovery comes through word of mouth marketing. It’s good if someone buys your book, but it’s even better if they read it, so they can happily recommend it to their friends and family and spread your book by word of mouth.
Authors, find your readers on Shelfie
As an author you know readers buy books from Amazon, Barnes and Noble, or their favorite independent bookstore. What you don’t know is who bought your book. This creates a disconnection between you and your readers.
With Shelfie, you can find those readers. It doesn’t matter where they got your book from as long as it’s on their bookshelves. Everyone who owns your book will be visible on your book’s page. You can see what books they rated, what they loved most, and which books they didn’t quite fall in love with. You can jump into the conversation to answer questions, update fans on your latest book, or let them know where to find you elsewhere online.
Authors, tell your readers about your next book
Shelfie sends the publisher (or author if self-published) the contact information for the readers who bundle your books. Authors and publishers can use this information to market the next book. This is marketing that makes sense. After all if you loved the first book in a series, you’ll want to know when the next book is released!
